Make Way for the NEW

Happy New Year, Friend!

2024 marks the beginning of a new decade for the Calgary Dream Centre.

After 20 years of working with those pursuing a life free from addiction, we understand the power a fresh start can bring. Every resident’s “New Year” starts the day they walk through our doors.

Many of us relate to the desire for a fresh start this year and recognize it takes courage to let go of old patterns and learn a new way of living.

May the courage our residents show us daily, as they let go of old habits in exchange for a better, healthier way of living, inspire us all to make way for the new in our lives.

Keep reading to hear about some NEW and exciting updates that are taking place right here, at the CDC.

NEW CDC Updates

Residential Recovery Program Update

We have exciting news. In November 2023, we changed the length of our Residential Recovery Program from 49 days to 90 DAYS!

Why is this good news? New research shows that the best outcomes in drug and alcohol recovery are linked to programs that run for a longer length of time. By extending our program, we are setting up those who come our way for greater success in their recovery journey.

Although we have increased the duration of our recovery program, the journey with us doesn’t need to end at 90 days! Our continuum of care model includes recovery-orientated housing opportunities ready to support individuals for as long as they need.

Change Is Good Turns 2

Curated secondhand – sold for change.

Happy Birthday to our beautiful curated secondhand store, Change is Good (CIG). We want to take a moment to highlight our amazing CIG team who has worked so hard over the last few years to bring this social enterprise to life.

“I can hardly believe it’s been two years… it feels like CIG has been around forever, but also for 5 minutes. Our CDC mission, along with the people who support us every day truly keeps us going through the highs and lows.

We are so thankful for our supporters. When the store opened up we had an idea of what it would become but our customers have shaped and molded us so much. I can’t help but be in awe of all we’ve created through CIG”.

Heather Jansen, Social Enterprise Manager

Haven’t had a chance to visit yet? Get a sneak peek of our store by watching our birthday video here! (link to CIG Instagram or Imbed video)

Volunteer Experience At The CDC

Meet Kleina, a loyal volunteer who brings a smile to our faces every time she is here!

We asked Kleina a few questions about her volunteer experience at the CDC.

Kleina, how did you hear about the CDC?

I heard about the CDC through a radio advertisement. Before this, I thought it was a sleep center clinic of some sort.

What motivated you to volunteer with us?

I was motivated to become a volunteer because I knew of folks personally and professionally who were battling with addiction. I wanted to be a channel of hope to them.

What do you love most about volunteering at the CDC?

I love everything that I do at the CDC. I enjoy serving lunch or dinner while sharing a smile with the residents, preparing for events, mingling with residents while listening to their stories, and praying for those who need encouragement. Ping-pong with the residents is always fun too!

Why do you continue to volunteer?

I continue to volunteer because it’s my passion. I want the residents to know the CDC is not just a place you check in and get out. I want the residents to know that they matter and there is hope. They are not alone, and those of us who serve at the CDC care about them.

“To all the ‘wannabe’ volunteers. I encourage you all to come and check out the CDC. Our residents need you to help them with homework, or simply enjoy a coffee and chat. We welcome the special skillset you can bring, whether it’s sewing, administration, woodwork, etc.

If you’re out there and you’ve been listening and watching on the sidelines, it’s time to get out and join the CDC.” – Kleina

Event Spotlight

The Legacy Gala

This past October we had the privilege of celebrating our 20th Anniversary with an event called ‘The Legacy Gala’.

During this time, attendees had the opportunity to step into our story and learn through a special immersive experience how we came to be where we are today.

We also celebrated the retirement of founding member and former CEO Jim Moore.

It’s not too late to experience this special event with us! Check out this video that beautifully captures this memorable evening.

20 Years of IMPACT

Thanks to your generosity, over the last 20 years we have been able to provide Housing for 9,789 Individuals & 1,999,932 Meals.

We are so grateful for your continued support. Thank you for helping us, help others.

We look forward to a NEW year full of fresh opportunities to help more Calgarians find hope and healing.
